American Roots is a Michigan Native Plant Nursery located about halfway between Clarkston and Ortonville in the center of Northern Oakland County. We are approximately 7 miles from the I-75 Clarkston/Davison Exit. We grow Michigan Genotype native plants from seed, division and occasionally from plant rescue. The 10 acres we inhabit has vernal pools, wooded wetlands, open field edges, upland Oak-Hickory woodlands and wooded lake frontage on Perry Lake. Most of the plants we grow are from here or very near here, and we specialize in Oakland County Genotype. We are committed to being a Native Plant Nursery “Of this Place”. Occasionally we use seed from other locations when the plant is just too wonderful not to grow. We offer Woodland & Prairie Wildflowers, Grasses, Sedges, Ferns, Vines and a growing number of Shrubs. We carry plants appropriate for shade, sun, rain gardens or lake edges and have extensive gardens to explore containing natives alone and integrated with other ornamentals. We are dedicated to providing a diverse offering of healthy Michigan “American Plants for your American Garden!”

Barson's Greenhouse, established in 1980, is a family owned and operated business.

When you walk in the door, chances are you'll be met by our cat, Sophie. Or our two Soft Coated Wheaton terriers Sam and Charlie.

Every time you walk into our greenhouse you will notice a change of some sort. You may not know what it is, but you will know something is different. That is because we are always changing, whether it's a new product line, or new plant benches that make it easier for you to shop.

We are located in southwest Michigan and sell plants that are native to our region. Nearly all of the plants we propagate will be Michigan genotype with most of our seed sources being located in southwestern Michigan. For a select few species which have become rare (or even extinct) in Michigan, plants from seed that originated in northern Indiana, northeastern Illinois, or southern Wisconsin will be available. We specialize in upland prairie and savanna species, but we also offer a selection of both wetland and forest species. Small quantities of seed will also be made available for species that cannot readily be grown in containers; this will be noted in the species description.

Mary Ann's MI Trees & Shrubs Logo
Mary Ann's trees and shrubs are grown from Michigan seeds. Mary Ann grows the trees and shrubs in containers designed for the specialized root systems of trees and shrubs. No more roots growing in circles. Trees and shrubs grown in containers have their entire root system. When you buy balled and burlaped trees, the root system has been cut to make the roots a size to fit in the burlaped ball. It can take the tree several years to recover its necessary root growth. Bare rootstock trees can only be sold when the tree is dormant. So they can be purchased only in early spring and late fall and must be planted immediately.

Container grown trees are easy to move. Her largest container is an 8 gallon size, 11 inches wide and 24 inches tall. It can be easily carried by a physically fit person. Container grown trees and shrubs can be planted anytime it is convenient to the new owner. Just keep them in part sun and water as needed until they are planted.

Most of the trees and shrubs may be smaller than those in other nurseries. Trees and shrubs that are smaller and therefore younger, transplant with a higher success rate. That's why Mary Ann's motto is "Grown to grow with YOU in Michigan". Trees and shrubs that are smaller and younger, are cheaper, too. Mary Ann's trees and shrubs range from $10 to $50. The $50 trees are in the 8 gallon pot and are over 4 foot tall. Please visit or call or email to see what is available.

Let us help you naturalize your landscape.

Whether you are planting a small plot in your yard, landscaping a workplace, naturalizing a golf course, stabilizing your shoreline, establishing wildlife habitat, or restoring a natural area, it  makes good sense to utilize native plant species.

Native species are adapted to Michigan’s climate and soils.  Over time utilizing native species can save both the environment and money as fertilizers, watering, and continuous mowing are not necessary.  These plants provide habitat for Michigan’s wildlife, which is quickly disappearing with development.

Not only are these plants beautiful and interesting to the eye, but the incredible root systems of these plants rebuild the soil and work as filtering systems.  Michigan’s native flora is unique to Michigan and provides us with a sense of place.  We encourage you to learn about, celebrate, and utilize these plants in your landscape.

Over the years Prairie Moon has continued to grow plants from Dot Wade’s Illinois  collection along with hundreds of others from throughout the upper Midwest. We also work with a network of small producers who sell their seed on consignment through Prairie Moon. Each year we strive to improve and to provide the highest quality seeds and plants. We are proud to be part of the greater community dedicated to ecological restoration and preservation.

Even if you are cultivating natives on a small corner of an urban lot, you are part of this ongoing experiment on how to assist nature. 29 years is considered a short time in the beginning of a prairie restoration. While we feel the native plant industry has matured a lot in that time, we all still have many lessons ahead. Thanks for helping us learn.

Prairie Nursery is famous for its vigorous and dependable transplants. All of our plants are nursery grown in central Wisconsin, in USDA Zone 4. Temperatures range from 105 degrees F.(40 degrees C.) in summer to - 40 F.(-40 C.) in winter. This means our plants are "Wisconsin Hardy"

Grown in pots, or as roots right in the ground, each plant is grown by the best method to encourage its optimal development. This assures that you will receive the highest quality plants available. Each plant is then carefully inspected and graded before being certified "Prairie Nursery Quality," and then shipped directly to you.

Wildtype Design, Native Plants & Seed was established in 1996. For the past 15 years we have specialized in growing plants native to Michigan, from Michigan genotypes. We grow trees, shrubs, grasses and wildflowers typical of Michigan woodlands, wetlands and prairies. It is our objective to propagate nursery stock with enough genetic diversity to create self-sustaining populations. Therefore the vast majority of our plants are grown from wild seed stock. This is what we mean when we say our plants are borne to be wild.

Wildtype also provides ecological services for public, commercial and residential projects focusing on restoration and preservation of native landscapes.

The name of the nursery, WILDTYPE, is borrowed from the genetic term "wild type," which describes individuals with the most common genes in the native population. The name reflects the genetic status of the plants being propagated – they are grown from wild seed stock. Our plants have not been bred or intentionally selected for uniformity. The seeds (and in some cases cuttings) of all the species listed were collected in Michigan and many from multiple sources. An accession number accompanies all the plants and seeds we sell. This number identifies when and where the seeds or cuttings were collected and where and how they were grown and handled. This information can be supplied upon request.
